MEACO is one of the four supranational organizations of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO), the executive body of the International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies (IFOS). 36 National Ophthalmic Societies in 32 countries of the Middle East and Africa region are members of MEACO, including Turkey and Iran, making MEACO the largest supranational organization in the whole world.

The MEACO International Congress, which is held every three years, is the largest ophthalmic congress of the region, and is the only congress that is truly international and on parallel with the international ophthalmic congresses of Europe and the United States of America and attracts ophthalmologists, eye care professionals, and exhibiting companies from the region, as well as from Europe, the Americas, Far East Asia and Australia.
